Tuesday, February 19, 2008 Police get funds for housing projects
THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has already received the initial amount of P300 million from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to fund the housing and quartering projects for police personnel, a police official reported Monday.
PNP spokesman Nicanor Bartolome said the amount will be distributed equally among the three housing and quartering projects which are presently underway in Bicutan, Taguig City; San Miguel, Bulacan; and Baras, Rizal.
"The project manager of the PNP Housing and Quartering Project will later present an updated report on the progress of these projects as well as the proposed utilization of the funds initially released for the purpose," said Bartolome.
Bartolome said the amount is part of the P1.7-billion fund requested by the PNP from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to fund the three priority projects which we hope will address the housing problem of 57 percent or roughly 67,400 police personnel who are in need of decent and affordable housing for their own families.
Two more housing and quartering projects are being eyed in Camp Panopio, Quezon City and in Camp Castañeda, Silang, Cavite. These projects, however, will require a Presidential Proclamation that would amend an earlier proclamation to provide for the multi-use of these government real properties.
Bartolome said PNP Chief Avelino Razon Jr. has instructed the chairman of the PNP Housing Board and concurrent PNP Deputy Chief for Administration Jesus Verzosa to organize a Project Management Team for each for the five housing and quartering projects whose members will include, among others, a legal officer, an engineering officer, a logistics officer, and a personnel officer.
