Bishop backs revival of 'Hello Garci' probe

A BISHOP on Wednesday expressed support to the plan of former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. to reopen the investigation of the "Hello Garci" controversy.

Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez, public affairs officer of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said he personally supports the move, as there has been no closure on the issue of alleged election fraud in the 2004 presidential elections.

"Since there is no closure on the issue there is still many suspicions. So in a way it's a good move which I hope would be supported more objectively by different groups," he explained.

On Tuesday, de Venecia will file a resolution, which seeks for a "wide-ranging investigation" on the alleged election results manipulation.

However, he noted that the move should have been considered a long time ago.

"It should have been done way back then. But I think that will be treated with suspicion by many people because they have this projection that JDV (de Venecia) might have a different motivation for it," Iniguez said.

Earlier, CBCP president and Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo expressed support on the newly formed Council of Moral Revolution of the former Speaker and other anti-corruption advocates.

"We won't object to that if this would result in something good. This only means that the fight against graft and corruption is already starting within the government," he added. (FP/Sunnex)
