Archbishop asks faithful to repent

AS THE nation observes Holy Week, Manila Archbishop Gaudenico Cardinal Rosales advised Catholic faithful to repent, as confession is not enough.

"It doesn't mean that just because you've already confessed your sins, you can commit a sin again," he said.

He said one should also repent after confessing their sins, and try not to commit a sin again.

"Confession should be coupled with a person's willingness to repent for all the sins he committed and the resolve not to commit a sin again," Rosales said.

The prelate issued the reminder to Catholics as many of the faithful are going to confession in different churches during Holy Week.

Rosales stressed the importance of the sacrament of confession this Holy Week.

"It is through confession that the sins of men are being forgiven -- this Holy Week as we recall the sufferings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, let us remember that. He offered his life out of love for us," he said.

He said: "We can repay what the Lord has done for us, by not committing sins again. And so let us promise to sin no more."

Meanwhile, during Saturday's gathering of the Catholic charismatic group El Shaddai, President Arroyo Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo asked the public to join her and spend the Holy Week season in prayers and renewal.

Arroyo said the Lent is a time for reflection, sacrifices and love.

She added that whatever happens to life, "the Lord will always be there beside us."

The President said she has been joining the annual celebration of the El Shaddai since 1992 and she acknowledged the group for standing by her, supporting her, giving her advice and praying for her.

Despite the call of some sectors, including a number of religious groups, for President Arroyo to resign following allegations of corruption, the El Shaddai has kept mum and did not even join any of the anti-administration rallies. (FP/JMR/Sunnex)
