Monday, March 17, 2008 Vidal to Erap: Stick to your promise
CEBU Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal on Sunday reminded former President Joseph Estrada that he vowed not to run again in the upcoming 2010 presidential elections.
The prelate pointed out that Estrada made the promise to him even before President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo granted him (Estrada) pardon.
"He (Estrada) told me that he will no longer enter politics because he is not getting any younger," he said while recalling his earlier conversation with Estrada.
Likewise, Vidal urged the former President to stop making any political statements for the sake of the country.
"I told him please try to stop your statements for the sake of our country. I told him that during our meeting," he added.
Last week, Estrada hinted he might consider running in the 2010 May presidential elections if the people will still want him.
"I'll think about it. Right now I have no intention of running, but if the people will clamor for it, who am I to refuse?" he said during the Foreign Correspondents of the Philippines (Focap) at the Sofitel Hotel in Pasay City.
Estrada received his presidential pardon six weeks after he was convicted of plunder and sentenced of up to 40 years imprisonment by the Sandiganbayan. (MSN/Sunnex)
