lABS-CBN launches ‘The Singing Bee’

A SINGING-variety show has started to invade the television screen last Monday as local franchise of “The Singing Bee” took the spotlight with host actor-singer Cesar Montano.

Hosted by ex-N’Sync member Joey Fatone in the US version of the show aired at the NBC show, The Singing Bee is a karaoke showdown where lyrics are more important than tune. But it is not only a plain videoke singing contest rather it has a twist of spelling bee approach. A contestant will survive if he knows the lyrics of the song even if he does not hit even a single note.

Just like any other game shows, all challengers must undergo several rounds until one is recognized as the Singing Bee Champion. The champ will then get a chance to play the jackpot round amounting to P1 million if he gets to know the jackpot songs correctly. Some of the elements that added life to the show are the Bandble Bee, which is a live band that plays the melody that the players would sing. The band is headed by musical director Mel Villena. There are also sexy dancers dubbed the Honeybees, who sway to every song that played at the same entertained the audience.

For the mechanics of the show, in the first elimination round, the contestants must fill in a word of a given line in a song. For the second elimination, the participants must now solve a jumbled letter of particular song title. And for the last two rounds, the remaining contestants must fill in a much longer blank of a song. The three rounds are entitled To Bee Continued, JumbleBee, and Showdown, respectively.

The show which was franchised from Zeal Entertainment by ABS-CBN has launched its pilot last Monday where Pooh was declared as the champion. Other contenders of Pooh were Derek Ramsey, Jodi Santa Maria, Bayani Agbayani, Keana Reeves, and Heart Evangelista. (JRDB/Sunnex)
