Thursday, April 24, 2008 Priest defends medical team in surgical scandal
A CHURCH official on Wednesday rushed to the side of the doctors and nurses involved in the surgery scandal in Cebu City.
Monsignor Achilles Dakay, spokesman of the archdiocese of Cebu, said the scandal that happened at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) should not be blamed solely on the doctors and nurses but it should be the person responsible for the indecent incident.
"They seem to forget the whole thing. They are blaming the doctors for what they do but I think they should blame the guy for what he did," Dakay said.
He also admitted that the incident also indicated the weakening moral guidance among the Cebuanos and the spreading homosexuality in the province.
"We would like to feel sorry for what's happening here and maybe we could be partly to be blamed for it," he lamented.
The prelate said the Catholic Church sympathized with the homosexuals because they did not choose to be that, but committing homosexual acts would be "another thing".
"We should be ashamed. It's not just scandalous it's very shameful," he added.
Meanwhile, Dakay said they will coordinate with different schools in the province to further strengthen the teachings of the Lord and moral guidance among the youth in particular.
The Department of Health (DOH) earlier named the doctors and nurses involved in the controversial uploading of the operation conducted at VSMMC on January 3 where a perfume canister was removed from the anus of a 39-year-old male patient.
The controversial video was uploaded by a medical student to YouTube.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the members of the operating team had violated the protocol when they allowed bystanders to watch during the operation. (MSN/Sunnex)
