Friday, June 13, 2008 German nabbed for 'maltreating' wife, kids
IMMIGRATION Commissioner Marcelino Libanan on Thursday announced the arrest and pending deportation of a 70-year-old German national accused of maltreating and abusing his wife and two children.
Arrested on the strength of a mission order was Franz Joseph Weis, who was picked up by members of the Bureau of Immigration's (BI) Law Enforcement Division at his residence in Davao City. He is now detained at the Bicutan immigration jail pending deportation proceedings.
The arrest was made upon the request of his Filipino wife who claimed that her husband had "systematically abused, maltreated and threatened" her and their two minor sons for the past several years.
Libanan said Weis should have been deported a long time ago because he had been overstaying in the country since 2003 when he last arrived as a tourist and was admitted for only 21 days.
Based on the sworn complaint by Weis' wife, she alleged that her husband traumatized her and their two sons due to his repeated threats that he will harm and kill them.
The woman also claimed that her husband had threatened to plant a bomb in their house before he dies so that his family will not inherit anything from him.
Weis will be sent back to Germany as soon as the BI issues the deportation order and after the commission secures the necessary clearances for his deportation.
Libanan said the foreigner will likewise be blacklisted and banned from re-entering the Philippines. (FP/Sunnex)
