Tuesday, June 24, 2008 Speak-out: Firm welcomes publisher's appeal on libel conviction
The Firm welcomes the motion for reconsideration filed today by Ninez Cacho Olivares. We recognize her right to seek reconsideration of her conviction. She is entitled to due process of law. We will continue to be fair to her even if she was never fair to us.
We are prepared to meet the recycled arguments in her motion. We will file our opposition shortly. The court found her guilty citing her own admissions and we look forward to the verdict being upheld.
While she admonished her counsel for reposing faith in our system of justice and reiterated her unabashed disdain against our courts, she nevertheless expressed her desire to fight it out all the way to the Supreme Court. Her irresponsible statements are typical of someone not entitled to the protection of press freedom. After maligning us, she is now maligning our judicial system.
We are confident in the strength of our case and in the 47 other libel charges she is facing. She claims to be fighting for press freedom yet refuses to be held accountable for its abuse. We shall continue to vigorously pursue these cases to hold her accountable. We shall continue our fight for vindication.
