Arroyo to leave presidency in 2010

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo wants to leave a “better Philippines” as her legacy to the Filipino people and her successor when her term expires in 2010.

Presidential Management Staff (PMS) director general Cerge Remonde during Friday’s press briefing in Malacañang said the President will definitely bow out of office in 2010.

“Any talk of term extension is without basis. The President intends to finish her term and leave to the next president a better Philippines,” he said.

He pointed out that the President’s eighth State of the Nation Address (Sona) “will not in any way tackle Charter change.”

Instead, Arroyo’s Sona will spell out the accomplishments of her administration, specifically the national social welfare program, said Remonde.

The official said if only the President’s critics will listen to the Sona, they will realize that her address will deal with real accomplishments.

“This administration can stand on its record compared to what other senior government officials (SGO) managed to do during their time,” he said. “We hope, they (President’s critics) will give us a chance,” he added. (Press release)
