Roxas: Lim can join Liberal party

DETHRONED Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) president and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim is welcome to join the Liberal Party (LP), said LP stalwart and Senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.

During Thursday’s press briefing in Makati City, Roxas said talks between the LP leadership and Lim are still ongoing, adding that the Manila mayor is “much welcome” to the party since he was the party’s standard bearer during the 1998 presidential elections.

Lim only garnered 8.7 percent of the vote and finished fifth among the 11 presidential candidates during the 1998 elections.

“I don’t want to put my words into Mayor Lim’s mouth but we have invited him and we hope that he will reconsider our offer,” said Roxas.

“We have high regard for Mayor Lim and we respect him. We welcome him if he intends to join the party,” he added.

The senator made the announcement following the decision of the mayor to leave the PMP.

Lim said he would remain in the opposition fold and that former President Joseph Estrada, chairman of the PMP, would remain his good friend.

He submitted a letter of resignation to Estrada, after the former leader publicly announced that the mayor is leaving the party.

Reacting to the resignation, Estrada said Lim was “not a loss” to the party.

Meanwhile, Roxas also refused to comment on the possibility of a Mr. Palengke-Dirty Harry tandem for the 2010 elections. (AH/Sunnex)
