Monday, August 25, 2008 Palace: 'Be proud of Olympic RP team'
A MALACAÑANG official said the Philippines should still be proud of the Filipino athletes who joined the Beijing Olympics in China despite their failure to secure any gold.
Deputy Presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said while it is "unfortunate" that no gold had been won, the heroism and patriotism of the 15 Filipino athletes should be an inspiration to other Filipinos to do their best especially for the country.
"We are proud of our athletes and sports officials who have dedicated and committed their efforts to represent our country to the Beijing Olympics. It is unfortunate that they were not able to bring home the much desired medals, however, it is their heroic efforts and patriotism that should serve as an inspiration for every Filipino to do their best for their country," Fajardo said.
Sports officials said they had received words that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who went to Beijing for the opening of the Olympics and to boost the morale of the Philippine team, was "unhappy" with the country's medal tally.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, Presidential Management Staff Cerge Remonde and Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said they have not talked to President Arroyo about the Olympics in the past days or are they aware that she has made such a comment.
They added that they are not aware at the moment of any scheduled welcome ceremonies for the Philippine team, similar to the heroes' welcome accorded to other athletes or personalities that competed in international events.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez said he is taking responsibility but others should also be accountable for it. (JMR/Sunnex)
