LABOR unrest in various commercial establishments in the country has increased.
This, after the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB), an attached agency of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), reported that about 50,000 workers are now unhappy and threatening to go on strike as a result of labor disputes.
NCMB records also showed that 44,693 workers from 289 commercial establishments have filed notices of strikes.
The data likewise revealed that the number of notices of strikes filed from January to August 15 increased by five percent from the recorded 277 cases during the same period last year.
The number of affected workers also went up by three percent from 2007 record of 43,507 to a total of 44,693 this year.
Recorded number of full-blown work stoppages increased from three last year to a total of five.
About 1,115 workers were temporarily displaced this year as a result of strikes compared to 292 affected workers last year.
NCMB records further indicated growth in the number of preventive mediation from 370 to 374 this year. The number of affected workers, however, dropped from 80,194 to 68,124.
But the labor department said more than half or 66 percent of the notices of strikes were settled as well as 76 percent of the preventive mediation cases filed with the NCMB. (MSN/Sunnex)
