Vidal orders 'Oratio Imperata' for peace in Mindanao

CEBU Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal has issued an "Oratio Imperata" or mandatory prayers for peace to reign in Mindanao.

The Oratio Imperata was issued last Sunday amid the ongoing conflict between government forces and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Over 140 parishes in the archdiocese of Cebu have been reciting the Oratio after communion, according to an article posted on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

Likewise, Vidal directed all parishes to conduct a second collection in all masses starting Sunday until August 31, 2008, to help the affected civilians in Lanao provinces.

The article also revealed that Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan, a social arm of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines, has started a fund drive to help the victims in the area.

"We are appealing for any financial aid that you can extend to our brothers and sisters in Mindanao who are caught in this strife. They are in dire need of medicines, water and food supplies," said Ismael Jose III V. Chan-Gonzaga, executive director of Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan.

The funds received will be sent to Mindanao through the partnership of the archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, under the leadership of its Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, and Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan).

The Mindanao conflict stemmed when the signing of the memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain (MOA-AD) between the government and the MILF was stalled.

Local government officials in Mindanao have questioned some of the agreement's provisions, particularly the proposed expansion of the current coverage of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) and turn it into the wider Bangsamoro Juridical Entity (BJE). (FP/Sunnex)
