INTELLIGENCE policemen arrested a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander for a kidnapping charge.
Ismael Akmad Jakiri, also known as Ismael Saafar alias Kumander Tigre Jakiri, was arrested Monday afternoon along Marcos Highway in Barangay Apopong, General Santos City by a combined police and military team from the General Santos City Police Office and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Task Force Gensan.
In his report to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Avelino Razon Jr., PNP Regional Director for Northern Mindanao Felizardo Serapio Jr. said Jakiri was arrested on orders of Judge Milanio Guererro of the Municipal Trial Court of Palembang, Sultan Kudarat.
A warrant of arrest was issued for Jakiri and his two close aides, Salem Piana and Datu Dido, to stand trial for the crime of kidnapping and serious illegal detention. The court recommended no bail for the accused.
A police team under Senior Superintendent Robert Po and Chief Inspector Amante Suriaga served the warrant for Jakiri’s arrest.
Court records disclosed that Jakiri, Piana and Datu Dido, along with 30 other MILF members, abducted Cesar Belonio, owner of the Tierra Verde Hotel in General Santos City, and Korean businessman Jae Kwon Yoon in February 2002.
The two kidnap victims were held for ransom by Jakiri's group. (VR/Sunnex)
