Sandigan told to jail Ang

THE Sandiganbayan Special Division was asked to re-impose the jail term on former gambling consultant Charlie “Atong” Ang for alleged violations of his probation.

In a letter sent to the anti-graft court, journalist Ligorio Naval claimed that Ang committed “serious misbehavior” by allegedly engaging in jueteng, an illegal numbers game, in Cavite.

According to Naval, who hails from Bacoor, Cavite, Ang has namedropped President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to protect his gambling operations from extortion by the local police.

He added that Ang is shaving his collections from small-town lottery (STL) operations.

“There appears (to be) serious misbehavior that warrants proper corrective and/or disciplinary action/actions with the end of finally recalling his probation privilege,” Naval said.

Ang is serving a two-year probation, which was approved by the court in March last year, after he pleaded guilty to a lesser crime of “corruption of public officials in relation to indirect bribery.”

A former co-accused in the plunder case of pardoned President Joseph Estrada, Ang avoided serving his six-year jail term for pleading guilty.

Ang was barred from “engaging in any form of gambling activities,” as one of the conditions set by the Sandiganbayan in his probation.

He now works as a consultant for a gaming company, which secured an STL franchise in Cavite. (Sunnex)
