2 robbers killed in shootout

TWO suspected robbers who earlier held up an FX taxicab and wounded one of the passengers were killed after they engaged Las Piñas policemen in a running gunbattle Monday morning.

Las Piñas Police Chief John Sosito said the identities of the robbers remained unavailable as of Monday afternoon.

He said the robbers held up passengers of an FX taxicab plying the Alabang-Baclaran route at 10:30 a.m. when they were intercepted by combined Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) and intelligence policemen.

"We were tipped off about the incident along Alabang-Zapote road and when we responded to the area, the robbers apparently got panic and shot the passengers injuring one," Sosito said, adding that the robbers then scampered to different directions with the police in pursuit.

In a bid to escape the policemen, the robbers held hostage several persons who were lining up to get their license at a nearby Land Transportation Office (LTO).

Police identified the hostages as Jennifer Silanga, Jonjon Torres, and Primo Acurin.

A shootout ensued later which resulted in the killing of the two robbers.

Another robber was arrested by the police.

Sosito, however, did not name the nabbed robber on the directive of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Jesus Verzosa. (AH/Sunnex)
