PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has approved the promotion of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Deputy Director General Jesus Verzosa to the rank of Police Director General (4-star general), the highest rank in the PNP.
Verzosa assumed the country's top police post last September 27, replacing now retired Director General Avelino Razon Jr.
In his first public appearance in the PNP's TV show Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis (Tsip), Verzosa expressed gratitude to President Arroyo for the promotion, which he described as "the professional fulfillment of every career officer."
"This will inspire me more to prove myself worthy of the trust and confidence of the President and the Filipino people," Verzosa said.
Under Section 29 of Republic Act (RA) 6975, an act establishing the PNP under a reorganized Department of the Interior and Local Government, "the head of the

The same law specifies a rank structure for members of the PNP for purposes of efficient administration, supervision, and control.
It also stated that the second in command of the PNP with the rank of Deputy Director General shall be the Deputy Chief of the PNP for Administration while the third in command with the rank also of Deputy Director General shall be the Deputy Chief of the PNP for Operations.
At the national office, the head of the directorial staff with the rank of Deputy Director General shall be known as Chief of the Directorial Staff. Heads of the various staff divisions in the directorial staff shall have the rank of Police Director with the position title of Director of the Directorial Staff of their respective functional divisions, according to RA 6975.
