Monday, October 13, 2008 Gretchen on Laarni: 'We have different singing style' By Jill Beltran
PEOPLE can't help but compare Pinoy Idol winner Gretchen Espina to Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) Season 2 grand champion Laarni Losala. It's inevitable because they both won the prestigious title of the two hit reality singing show on TV.
When Sun.Star got the chance to interview Gretchen, the 20-year-old singer from Biliran was asked how she is dealing with the relentless comparison between her and Laarni.
"We have different singing styles. She's also good," Gretchen said describing Laarni. "Maganda rin yung range niya so kudos for her!" she exclaimed.
Gretchen said although people keep comparing her to Laarni and some say Laarni is a better singer than her, she still supports the PDA champ.
"Sobrang supportive naman ako sa ibang artists. With regards to comparison iba-iba naman kami ng strengths," the Pride of Biliran said.
Gretchen revealed that she is in a way saddened by criticisms but she tries to handle them positively. "Ate Laarni and I have different supporters. She has ABS fans, I have GMA fans. We have our own sets of supporters and all the people calling me have good feedbacks on my performances."
Now that she holds the Pinoy Idol title, Gretchen said she will do her best to be known through her craft.
"Well, now I want to focus on my singing career. It's one of my goals actually. I will focus on my album. It's so hard to get in the industry and this is a big opportunity for all of us Pinoy Idols who was able to penetrate the industry," she said.
Gretchen is currently recording her first album under Sony BMG. It is expected to be released sometime in November. "Actually we're still deciding what songs to put in the album. Hopefully I have originals at the same time covers."
