Tuesday, November 25, 2008 Blumentritt to be cleared of illegal vendors
AFTER demolishing some 300 stalls erected by illegal sidewalk vendors in Baclaran, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has trained its sight on Manila’s downtown Blumentritt area after receiving the same complaints.
MMDA general manager Robert Nacianceno said the agency will crack down on vendors in the area who are blocking traffic on the roads and setting up stalls on the sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to walk on the roads.
“These stalls obstruct the flow of traffic in the area, forcing pedestrians off the sidewalks thereby endangering them in the process as they can be hit by passing vehicles,” Nacianceno said.
He said the MMDA will coordinate with Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and the local police to prevent any untoward incidents during the clearing operation.
Several MMDA personnel were killed or hurt in previous clearing operations in the metropolis.
Last Saturday, agency personnel tear down stalls and other structures surrounding the compound of Baclaran’s Redemptorist Church after the parish priest and legitimate stall owners requested for assistance in removing the structures.
“The clearing operation was done in conjunction with the approval of the Parañaque City Government and parish officials as well as the request of legitimate stall owners that are being affected by the presence of illegal vendors who virtually rob them of their income,” Nacianceno said.
He said illegal vendors have free rein in the area after barangay officials issued a permit allowing them to use the street to peddle their wares to the inconvenience of motorists and pedestrians. (AH/Sunnex)
