Friday, December 19, 2008 Militant lawmaker dies at 53
NATIONAL Confederation of Cooperatives (Natco) party-list Representative Guillermo Cua died on Wednesday evening in a hospital in Cagayan de Oro City due to liver cancer.
House secretary general Marilyn Yap said the 53-year-old lawmaker, who was an accountant by profession, is survived by his wife Fe and children Gerard, Leslie Ann, and Carmela.
She said Cua's family is yet to request for a necrological service at the House.
Coop-Natco second nominee Jose Ping-Ay, an engineer, will assume Cua's post.
Cua was the fifth member of the 14th Congress who passed away after Basilan Representative Wahab Akbar, Mt. Province Representative Victor Dominguez, Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran, and Misamis Oriental Representative Danilo Lagbas.
Rubi Mayor, Cua's political affairs officer, said the congressman had been diagnosed with liver cancer sometime in October this year and had undergone treatment since then.
"He does not smoke or drink liquor. He was always at the gym and he was health-conscious," said Mayor.
Deputy majority leader Neptali Gonzales II of Mandaluyong, for his part, said it appeared that Cua was just waiting for the ratification last Tuesday of his pet measure, which amends the Cooperative Code of the Philippines. (WV/Sunnex)
