Palace welcomes senators’ calls for political truce

MALACAÑANG on Sunday welcomed the calls of senators for a political truce “so that the country could focus on facing the challenges of a looming economic meltdown.”

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza was reacting to the calls of Senators Manuel Roxas II and Panfilo Lacson for a political ceasefire. Roxas had called for tax credit while Lacson called for the early passage of the P1.4 trillion 2009 budget.

Dureza said it is good that the calls came from the Senate this time, because Malacañang has been making the same appeal for some time.

He said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has been focused on governance and reforms so that the country would be stable enough to face the global economic crisis.

“We welcome this and the Palace had been saying this all along that we should unite because the effort to prepare for the economic situation is beyond politics. It should be above politics; it should be above the fray, so to speak,” he said.

The Palace official hoped that the other political leaders would heed the calls of Roxas and Lacson. (JMR/Sunnex)
