2 gangs clash: 1 dead, 3 hurt By Ben O. Tesiorna
DAVAO -- One youngster died while three others were wounded when two unidentified gangs clashed near the Assumption School along J.P. Cabaguio Avenue in Barangay Wilfredo Aquino, Davao City early Sunday morning.
Dead was Jonilo Accion, 21, and a native of Talicud in the Island Garden City of Samal. Accion died while being treated at the Davao Medical Center for two hours.
Police identified those wounded as Rico Amot, 25; and brothers Ricky Espinosa, 22, and Richard, 17, all natives of Talicud, Igacos and residents of Cabaguio here. The three have already been declared out of danger.
Witnesses said the victims just came from a disco party in Barangay Aquino whose residents were celebrating their patron saint's fiesta.
As the victims were waiting for a ride, another group of unidentified persons suddenly pelted them with stones.
The victims retaliated by running after the unidentified group while at the same time throwing stones at them too.
Little did the victims know that colleagues of their enemies were waiting for them behind a dark corner.
The stalkers suddenly attacked the victims with knives and other deadly weapons.
The group reportedly cornered Accion and stabbed him repeatedly, causing his death.
Rodrigo Espinosa, 53, father of the Espinosa brothers, denied that his sons are members of a gang.
"Dili, wala na silay gang. Kadto segurong nanunggab nila maoy myembro sa gang. Dugay-dugay na man na sila diri kay naa man ko'y anak nga minyo diri. Nagtrabaho man na sila sa Ecoland, wala man na silay atraso," said the father. (No, they are not with any gang. Maybe those who attacked them are part of a gang. My sons have been staying here for a long time. They are working in Ecoland; they have not wronged anybody.)
PO2 Jayson Villanueva of the Sta. Ana Police Station however said the persons involved in the riot are members of gangs. As to what gang, Villanueva was unable to say.
Police are still investigating the incident to identify the persons responsible for the death of Accion and the wounding of the three others.
