Grenade lobbed near BIR officer's house By Danilo A. Reyes
GENERAL SANTOS -- Two men on a motorcycle threw a grenade Thursday dawn at an apartment compound where Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) district officer Eduardo Obero lives.
No one was hurt when the grenade exploded but it damaged a Toyota Tamaraw FX and an Elf truck parked inside the apartment compound along Balimbing Street in General Santos City.
Obero was reportedly asleep when a loud explosion rocked the neighborhood. The apartment is just one block away from Pendatun police station.
Witness Ruel Gregorio told police investigators he saw the unidentified suspects fled in the direction of the national highway.
Operatives of the PNP explosive and ordnance division (EOD) were able to recover the safety lever of the grenade at the scene of the explosion.
Police are now investigating if Obero was the target of the grenade blast.
Obero last month issued several warnings to business establishments in the city to pay their taxes on time.
The BIR district chief also warned delinquent taxpayers that his office would crack down on tax evaders.
Pendatun police precinct head Chief Insp. Harrison Martinez, however, said Obero did not receive any threats prior to the incident.
They have invited apartment owner Eduardo Villamor and the other tenants to give their statements to the police concerning the incident. Sun.Star General Santos |
