3 rebels killed, 8 captured in clashes By Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre
SAN QUINTIN -- Two communist rebels were killed while eight others were captured in a clash with government troops early morning Thursday at a barangay in this Pangasinan town, a military report said.
An Army patrol also killed a member of the communist New People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, near the town of Libmanan on the Bicol peninsula on Wednesday.
In Thursday's clash along the boundary of Barangays Logsit, Bolintaguen, and Kabalagoan in Pangasinan, the military recovered nine high-powered firearms, all M16 and M14 rifles, from the encounter site.
The 107th Provincial Mobile Group led by Chief Insp. Ricardo Revita and 48th Infantry Battalion headed by Major Marcial Constante conducted the operation, dubbed "Oplan Sandugo".
Military officials identified those who died as a certain Ka Larry and Ka Nestor.
Constante said they learned that the group was assigned to conduct ideological, organizational, and political work in eastern Pangasinan.
He said those captured were Rommel Tucay of San Jacinto, Benjamin Ganigan of San Nicolas, Levy Baldros of Umingan, Dino Bernardo of Tondo, Marylyn Esteban of Caranglaan, Nueva Ecija, Mar Almoite of Lupao, Marlo Cabado of Talugtug, and Diosdado Fariņas of Dupax.
He added that the rebels transfer from house to house while conducting their work, not staying long for the night. Soldiers finally cornered them, resulting in the encounter.
The alleged communist guerillas are now in the custody of the Pangasinan provincial mobile group for safekeeping.
The NPA is the 9,000-member armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines and is waging a 33-year Maoist rebellion. This year it was placed on the US government blacklist of "foreign terrorist organizations."
Peace talks between the government and the communists collapsed last year after the NPA assassinated two legislators. Sun.Star Pangasinan |
