Davao airport snags irked Arroyo: mayor

DAVAO -- Davao Mayor Rodrigo R. Dutere was so bothered about the many problems hounding the P4.9-billion Davao International Airport expansion project that he raised the problem to no less than President Arroyo herself.

"I have raised the matter to President Arroyo and she is fuming," Duterte told reporters at City Hall Thursday afternoon.

City Engineer Meirando Metran has formed a team to investigate the circumstances behind the structural defect affecting the entire second floor of the passenger terminal building, a major component of the airport expansion project.

But Duterte wants the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to conduct a separate inquiry into the airport construction mess.

"There is something wrong somewhere," he said.

Aside from the major structural defect in the airport passenger terminal, the project may also end up without funding. Since work on some of the components of the project has been so delayed, its implementation unit fears it may not make it to the closing dates for loans from the Asian Development Bank and the European Investment Bank.

"I can also ask DOTC to investigate so that we can use that airport for a long period of time," Duterte said.

Metran said he would try to determine if the project is being constructed in accordance with the National Building Code.

If his office finds the project violated the code, it will seek legal action and may include the contractor in the suit, added Metran.

"We will go after them," he stressed.

Duterte is incensed not only with the delays suffered by the DIA project but also in the construction of a new Ma-a bridge.

The local chief executive said both programs are national projects undertaken by national agencies that are proving to be "local miseries." Sun.Star Davao
