BAROTAC NUEVO -- Two barangay officials were found dead Thursday along the highway in Barangay Agcuyawan Kalsada-Poblacion Zamora in this Iloilo town.

One was barangay councilman Antonio Arcan, face on the ground, his unzipped pants down, and his sexual organ peeking out of his underwear. Investigators found stab and gunshot wounds on him.

Some 20 to 25 meters away from him was Emily Gamboa, also a councilwoman, of Barangay Cruz -- her tongue out, bloodied from stab wounds, pants unzipped and without her underwear, which was later found a few meters away.

Both were said to be in their forties.

Authorities said they were still determining the motive for the killing.

When the incident happened, Arcan's wife was working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong.

On Wednesday night, at about 7 p.m., Arcan's sister said he told her he was going to take some passengers to another barangay using his tricycle.

Also about that same time, Gamboa reportedly asked permission from her husband, Efren, to fetch their seven-year-old son from the house of her mother-in-law in Lagubang.

When she arrived home, at about 8:30 p.m., she asked permission to go out again to visit a friend.

Arcan's and Gamboa's bloodied bodies were later seen lying along the highway of Agcuyawan Kalsada-Poblacion Zamora at around 3 a.m. Thursday.

A tricycle believed to belong to Arcan was parked a few meters away. Also found were a homemade caliber .38 revolver and a pair of sandals said to belong to Gamboa.

Gamboa's pink underwear was discovered 10 meters away from where her body was found.

Rosalinda Brillantes, sister of Arcan, said she saw his brother at around 7 p.m. Wednesday driving in the direction of Barangay Agcuyawan Kalsada with two men companions. That was the last time she saw him alive.

Police said the crime scene is a dark at night, because there are no streetlights in the area. Besides, they said, there is a wide sugarcane plantation there and couples have been known to frequent the place. Sun.Star Iloilo
