MILF asked: Spare Napocor from bombs

GENERAL SANTOS -- An official of the state-owned National Power Corporation appealed Tuesday to Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels to spare the power firm from their bombing attacks.

Although the military has assured the company that power plants and substations will be closely guarded, Napocor Southwestern Mindanao manager Valdomera Zamora nevertheless said power transmission towers were vulnerable to rebel attacks and sabotage.

"Actually, AFP gave us assurances. But siguro sa (perhaps) on sub-station ug planta okay siya (and power plants, the situation is okay) because these facilities are confined in one area," Zamora said.

"Pero sa transmission, hindi naman puwedeng guwardiyahan ang mahabang linya."(But they could not watch over the long power lines leading to the transmission towers.)

Napocor officials claimed they have lost millions in properties and revenues as a result of the toppling down of several transmission towers and a power barge at the height of the clashes between government soldiers and MILF rebels last week.

The military in General Santos accused MILF rebels of being behind the destruction of transmission towers in Cotabato, Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat. MFV/Sun.Star General Santos
