2 miners still trapped in Diwalwal cave-in By Ben O. Tesiorna
DAVAO -- Rescue operations for the two remaining miners still trapped inside a collapsed tunnel in Diwalwal, Monkayo, Compostela Valley continue on its fourth day after the incident.
Mt. Diwata Barangay Captain Franco Tito said they are hoping that miners Oscar Cuer and Ernesto Caņete are still alive inside the Australia Mining Corporation tunnel that caved in Wednesday.
As of the latest count, 17 miners have been rescued. They were identified as Ricky Suringa, Cornelio Roselio Jr., Rogelio Lampira, Eddie Rojas, Ricky Marangit, Rafael Traya, Reynante Banduan, Archie Baguio, Allan Indoy, Henry Indoy, Carlito Indoy Jr., Intong Etorma, Harry Roselio, Loloy Gimao, Jay Reyes, Jay Elliot and one unidentified miner.
The cave-in was reported at around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday in Destino 5W position level 670 tunnel.
Initial investigation led by Constancio Paye of the DENR's Technical Working Group (TWG) showed that the area was declared a danger zone by the management of Helica Gold Mining Corporation last year and was supposed to be off limits to mining.
The trapped miners reportedly sneaked into the remaining pillar of the abandoned area which resulted to a rockfall thus the cave-in.
Tito denied reports that the number of miners trapped was about 500, adding that although many were indeed inside the tunnel at the time of the incident, lost of them were able escape - except for Cuer and Ca¤ete. Out of the hundreds of destinos inside only one caved in.
The rescued miners did not need hospitalization, having incurred only minor scratches.
