GENERAL SANTOS -- A top official of the General Santos City Police Office (GSCPO) was arrested inside a gambling den along Quirino Street Monday evening.

Nabbed was Chief Insp. Allan Tanato, an administrative officer assigned at the city police headquarters in Camp Fermin Lira.

Tanato denied he was inside the house of a certain Judith Tupas when the raiding policemen arrived in the area.

He said he was talking to a friend several meters away from the gambling den when the raiding team arrived.

"Well that is his defense but I (supposed) a picture was taken," Senior Supt. Jeorge Aquisap, city police chief, said.

The city police director said he already recommended the filing of charges against the police officer.

Aquisap added that Tanato was already relieved from his post.

"He knows that it is strictly prohibited but he took the risk," Aquisap said.

Aside from Tanato, nine other people were nabbed inside the residence of Tupas.

Police identified the other arrested persons as Judith Tupas, Eddie Bacatin, Magnifico Amoroso, Mamerto Aguilar, Leony Talingdan, Sofronio Pitogo, Napoleon Bulabon, Ricardo Yolin and Roger Par.

Seized from the alleged gambling den were several sets of mahjong tiles and playing cards.

Aquisap said the surprise raid was conducted after he received numerous reports that the residence of Tupas is being used for illegal gambling activities.

"The raid was conducted and several people were arrested including Chief Inspector Tanato," Aquisap said.

The raid, he added, should serve as a warning to illegal gambling operators in the city.

Aquisap further revealed he already recommended the transfer of Tanato outside the city.

"To be brutal and honest about it (I have already submitted) a report to the region," he also said. Sun.Star General Santos
