Sun.Star among top sites of RP online bankers

The Sun.Star website is one of the five most popular local websites of Filipinos who bank online, based on the DigitalFilipino.com research "Filipino Internet Banker Report."

For the report, DigitalFilipino.com interviewed 632 respondents from Manila, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Cagayan De Oro, Bicol, Baguio, Batangas and other parts of the country from February to October 2002.

Other popular local websites are Yehey, Inq7, Philstar and Pinoycentral.

On the other hand, the top foreign websites among Internet bankers are Yahoo, Google, CNN, Hotmail and MSN.

The Filipino Internet Banker, the sixth issue of the DigitalFilipino StatsReport, is written by Janette Toral, an IT practitioner with more than 14 years of combined experience in the areas of research, training, marketing, business planning, technical support and project management.

The report showed that online banking is still in its infancy and most of those who bank online are from the young age group or respondents below 40 years old.

It estimates that by the end of the year, Filipinos going online to bank will have reached 525,000.

In the report, the primary reasons given by respondents as to why they bank online is convenience and because it saves them time and resources.

On the online banking activities of respondents: 71 percent say they do balance inquiry on a weekly to monthly basis, 33 percent pay bills on a weekly to monthly basis, and 22 percent transfer funds once or twice a month.

An interesting finding is that the female Internet user market base remains largely untapped when it comes to online banking.

Based on the report, only 3 out of 10 online bankers are women.

The report suggests that banks come up with gender-balanced programs to encourage this segment to look into Internet banking and realize its benefits. Banks are also urged to innovate and offer services that go beyond traditional banking.

The whole report can be accessed at www.digitalfilipino.com, a website that is dedicated to following the growth of global technology and examining its impact on the lives of Filipinos.

The website also features other reports that provide analysis on local and international statistical developments in the field of information technology, Internet, e-commerce, outsourcing, and wireless markets. Sunnex
