3 die; vice mayor, 5 others hurt in mishap
By Harley Palangchao

CAMP DANGWA, Benguet -- Three died on the spot while six others, including a vice mayor and a councilor, were injured when a government-owned vehicle they were riding fell off a 100-meter ravine in Bugnay, Tinglayan, Kalinga, police reported Wednesday.

Supt. Rimas Calixto, chief of the Intelligence and Investigation Division of the Police Regional Office (PRO) in the Cordilleras, named the fatalities as Manuel Tigganay, Mario Sulog and Cadchi Ayangao, all natives of Tinglayan.

Injured were Tinglayan Vice Mayor Mario Palangdao, Councilor Suplay Alunday, Vargas Bayog, Josephine Lagunday, Marta Balisngog, Filig Ganggang and Hilda Sagilot.

Belated report reaching PRO-CAR revealed the vehicular accident happened at around 5 p.m. of May 5. Mechanical defect had caused the accident, the police theorized.

Reports said it took the rescuers several hours to retrieve the bodies of the casualties, including those who were injured. Some of the injured persons are now recuperating at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital in Tabuk, Kalinga.

Calixto said the officials and their companions were on their way back to Tinglayan from neighboring Bugnay town after attending an activity when the vehicle sustained mechanical defects. The vehicle later fell off the ravine.

Kalinga Gov. Macario Duguiang, in a telephone interview, reported that Palangdao and Alunday are now in stable conditions while those seriously injured are also recovering fast.

Earlier, concerned groups in the region have requested the regional Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) for the immediate leveling and paving of eroded portions of the road, as they claimed the bad state of major routes in the region is one of the causes of accidents. Sun.Star Baguio
