Talomo River overflows; 120 families evacuated

DAVAO -- More than a hundred families temporarily vacated their residence after a flashflood hit different parts of Davao City Wednesday morning following a torrential downpour.

According to reports received by the Davao City Disaster Coordinating Council (DCDCC), 50 families in NHA Bangkal sought temporary shelter at the Bangkal gym while 70 other families in Bago Gallera went to the neighborhood basketball court.

Among the flooded areas were Green Meadows Subd, Mintal Relocation, Lower Emelda Elementary School and the area surrounding the University of Philippines (UP) in Mintal, Tugbok District.

Areas in Bangkal where water reached knee-level were NHA, Royal Valley and Central Park subdivisions. The Teachers' Village, Barrio Cemento in Talomo, Sonny Ville Subdivision, Coca-Cola Plant in Ulas, Davao City were also affected by the flood. In Bago Gallera, Mega Homes Subd, Cariraya and Goldland residences were also inundated by water.

Water surged into houses at around 2 a.m. when the Talomo River started overflowing. Sandra Te, a resident of Mintal, phoned the DCDCC office around 2:35 a.m. and said the water level had already reached the roof of their house.

The flood receded around 5:40 a.m., DCDCC said.

Rumors, however, were rife that the water from the mini hydo-electric power plant of the Transmission Corporation (Transco) in Mintal was released, causing the flashflood. Transco officials denied the allegation.

No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Members of the Red Cross, Darcom, Kabalikat, Cyclone, Storm Group and Task Force Davao conducted rescue operations to affected residents.

Some of the families were able to return to the safety of their homes. The DCDCC has yet to give an estimate of the damage done by the flood. RCO
