Mindanao lauded for pro-child policies

DAVAO -- The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has commended Mindanao for having the most local policies protecting children in the country.

According to Local Policy and Institutional Development (LPID) Mindanao Coordinator Wilfredo Nuqui, this achievement could be attributed to the presence of "strong" children's champions in Mindanao.

They eventually have become local government executives, pushing for legislative measures that promote the rights of children, Nuqui said during the recently held workshop of the Regional Sub-Committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC 11) technical working group.

He also gave credit to advocacy efforts of RSCWCs in Mindanao, which have played an instrumental role in mainstreaming children's rights.

To date, the Mindanao provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Bukidnon, South Cotabato, Maguindanao, Agusan del Sur and the cities of Davao, General Santos, Digos, Cotabato, and Island Garden City of Samal have passed local code on children.

Sarangani and Cotabato provinces are also coming up with their codes for children.

In Visayas, only Bacolod, Negros Oriental, Kabankalan City and Bohol have enacted codes on children while in Luzon, only the provinces of Aurora, Quezon and Albay and the cities of Cabanatuan, Marikina, and Pasay have their own.

The Local Code on Children is one of the four gifts of children identified under LPID, which is a program component of the Fifth Country Program for Children (CPC V).

Other gifts are Local Development Plan for Children, Local Investment Plan for Children, Local State of the Children Report.Sun.Star Davao
