Several villages placed under dengue watch By Merlyn F. Velarde
GENERAL SANTOS -- City health officials said Tuesday they are placing several barangays in General Santos under close watch for possible outbreak of dengue and typhoid fever.
Dr. Fidel Peņamante, City Integrated Health Services (CIHS) chief, said his office has been receiving reports of dengue incidents in Barangays Calumpang, Fatima, Buayan and Lagao.
Peņamante also confirmed one patient died in Barrio B'laan in Labangal.
He said Barrio B'laan was put under observation because of reports of dengue and typhoid cases in the area.
Last week, two children died while 12 others were confined to hospitals because they fell ill with dengue or typhoid fever in Barangay Conel.
Although Peņamante said the situation is not yet alarming, he called on residents to observe proper sanitation and hygiene.
He likewise urged barangay officials to rid their area of stagnant water, such as those that could be found in pots, used tires and unattended pails and drums.
The CIHS chief said filthy and stagnant water is a fertile breeding ground for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
"This is a wake-up call para lahat tayo ay magtulungan na ma-kontrol o maiwasan ang naturang karamdaman (for all of us to help control and avoid this ailment)," he added.
Peņamante also said they are still trying to determine the cause of the spread of typhoid fever in Conel.
As of press time, the CIHS office said it has already monitored 19 patients affected by typhoid fever in Barangay Conel.
The City Council declared Barangay Conel under a state of calamity last Monday, to allow barangay officials to utilize its P99,000 calamity fund for this year. Sun.Star General Santos
