Dietician dies after subordinate's attack By Minerva B. Gerodias
CEBU -- After at least 15 hours in the intensive care unit, Chong Hua Hospital's chief dietician Antonia Miaga died at 10 a.m. Wednesday. She was 46.
The death certificate states that she died of "hypovolemic shock" or severe loss of blood due to hack wounds.
Food server Nestor "Dennis" Jabonero, 36, attacked Miaga with a butcher's knife past 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Jabonero will be charged with murder Thursday.
In a mobile phone interview, Joyce Navarro, the hospital's director for marketing, said the management will give assistance to Miaga's family.
Miaga has been with Chong Hua for more than 10 years. She and husband Henry, the chief of the maintenance division of the hospital, have four children, the youngest is six years old.
Miaga's relatives refused to issue statements when reporters visited them at the Cebu Rolling Hills Wednesday afternoon.
Navarro, however, admitted that the management has not discussed the assistance yet.
"Because their first concern was to save her. Top surgeons did the operation (on Miaga)," Navarro said.
Navarro said the hospital's lawyers will also help in pursuing the case against Jabonero.
Those close to Miaga called her "Neneng." She was described as a very happy person and nice to talk with.
On the other hand, fellow employees described Jabonero as the silent type.
Jabonero, who has been with the hospital for almost nine years, just reported for work last Tuesday noon when Miaga told him to go to the administration office because he had been marked absent without official leave (Awol) for not following his new day-off schedule.
Jabonero's usual days-off were on Sundays and Mondays but were changed to Fridays and Saturdays and were supposed to take effect this week.
But Jabonero said he forgot that his day-off schedule was changed that was why he failed to report last Sunday and Monday.
Jabonero had said that after he was told he had been tagged Awol, he blacked out and suddenly attacked Miaga.
Jabonero said he regrets what he did because he has much debt of gratitude to her. He used to borrow money from her to build his house.
Miaga sustained severe wounds in her back, nape, shoulder and right arm. Sun.Star Cebu
