Arroyo lifts 'state of rebellion' in the Philippines (3:37 pm)
MANILA -- President Arroyo Monday lifted a "state of rebellion" imposed last July 27 after she put down a military mutiny, her spokesman said.
Arroyo declared that the threat of a military rebellion against her has dissipated, her spokesman Ignacio Bunye told reporters.
He said Arroyo ordered the authorities to declassify documents seized from the mutineers, whose actions the government alleges were part of a larger plot to depose and possibly assassinate the president and replace her with a junta.
"The residual threat has eased," Bunye told reporters.
While there may have been conspirators still at large, the situation is "now under control," he told reporters.
More than 300 soldiers, including a number of junior officers, have been charged in civilian court with rebellion after they occupied a commercial center and residential building in Makati City for more than 20 hours last July 27.
Forty-five officers and 108 soldiers also face possible court-martial. AFP
