DAVAO -- A former vice mayor of Datu Piang town in Maguindanao and three other inmates were shot dead while trying to escape from the North Cotabato Provincial Jail last Saturday, officials revealed Sunday.

North Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Piņol said two other inmates succeeded in escaping after authorities failed to capture them.

Piņol identified those killed as Ben Mucalid, a former vice mayor accused of killing Datu Piang Mayor Said Ampatuan last year, and three other inmates.

The governor said six detainees, including Mucalid, bolted from the jail at around 3 p.m. Saturday.

However, jail guards were able to stop them while they were still a few meters away from the North Cotabato Provincial Jail.

Authorities were forced to open fire on the fleeing inmates, killing four of them. Two others, however, were able to escape.

Mucalid was arrested by authorities for illegal possession of firearms in M'lang in North Cotabato. He had been in detention since then. Sun.Star Davao
