2 cops killed, 1 hurt in attack on Kalinga PNP post (12:30 p.m.) By Harley Palangchao
CAMP DANGWA, Benguet — Two policemen were killed while another was serisouly wounded when armed bandits attacked their detachment in Tabuk, Kalinga on Wednesday night, the police reported Friday.
Senior Supt. Paul Mascarinas, director of the Kalinga Provincial Police Office, named the killed policemen as SPO4 Rufino Galong and PO2 Rodrigo Merdadero.
Wounded was SPO2 Teolimo Baglitit, who is now recuperating at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital in the capital town Tabuk.
Mascarinas reported these policemen were members of the six-member team assigned in a police checkpoint near Barangay Nambaran in Tabuk, Kalinga, where series of robbery and hold-up incidents were reported during the past months.
He said the bandits that attacked the police post reportedly belong to the Tulgao tribe, whose members were suspected of involvement in a series of robbery incidents in the province.
Mascarinas said police are hunting down the perpetrators.
Kalinga Gov. Macario Duguiang confirmed that the perpetrators belong to the Tulgao tribe, which is why he immediately called the attention of Kalinga Rep. Lawrence Wacnang, a member of the Tulgao tribe, to look into the matter.
“The attack on police detachment was really alarming considering that the perpetrators acted like notorious bandits,” Duguiang said.
The governor said he is seriously thinking of requesting the 5th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army to deploy more soldiers to beef up the police force in Kalinga.
“We have plans also to re-assign some policemen in peaceful municipalities to Tabuk because most the heinous crimes are committed here,” he said. Sun.Star Baguio |
