Help my twins: mom
CEBU -- The mother of newborn Siamese twins is asking for help for the separation of her daughters, who are joined at the abdomen.
Carina Manzo, 28, of Barangay Opao, Mandaue City gave birth to Princess Ann and Princess May last Nov. 12 in the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
Tests reveal the babies have separate intestines. Radiologist Philip Larraza-bal of Cebu Doctors' Hospital reported that each baby also has her own spinal column and pelvic bone. They have separate organs, too.
Carina delivered the twins, about two weeks before they were due, by Caesarian section. She and her husband both have relatives who have given birth to twins.
Separation
Siamese or conjoined twins develop when an embryo begins to split into identical twins, but the separation mysteriously stops.
The Manzos, whose initial hospital bills have hit P40,000, will need to raise hundreds of thousands for the surgical separation of the twins.
Carina is a housewife. Her husband, Jomarie, is a sewer in a clothing firm at the Mactan Economic Zone. Manzo gets help from her sister, Edelyn Cabradilla, and sister-in-law, Mielyn Pacquiao, in taking care of the twins.
The twins' aunts admitted they initially didn't want too much attention for Princess Ann and Princess May, who were baptized in the Christ the King Parish last Sunday.
"Molikay lang unta mi sa mga mangosyoso (We didn't want people to surround us out of curiosity)," they said.
Opao Barangay Captain Joy Ouano, who visited the twins Tuesday afternoon, said she will do whatever she can to help the family.
Ouano plans to write non-government organizations and private companies to ask for help for the Manzo twins.
She will also ask the City Government of Mandaue, headed by her brother Thadeo, to help.
Ouano urged those who would like to help the Manzo twins to give donations straight to the Manzo family in Purok Orchid, Barangay Opao.
Donors can also coordinate with the Opao Barangay Hall by calling 343-8054.
