Second senior Arroyo economic adviser quits (1:30 p.m.)

MANILA - Philippines Trade Secretary Manuel Roxas is to announce his resignation from President Gloria Arroyo's cabinet Wednesday in order to contest the senatorial elections next May, a Roxas aide said.

Roxas would be the second senior economic adviser to the Filipino leader to quit. Finance Secretary Jose Isidro Camacho, a respected investment banker, left last month.

Roxas, a former congressman and House of Representatives majority floor leader, has been planning to run for senator, the aide told the financial news service AFX-Asia.

He is also on the list of possible vice presidential candidates for Arroyo, who will seek a six-year term next year.

The presidential palace is considering Oscar Orbos, a former executive secretary and transportation secretary during the Corazon Aquino presidency in the 1980s, as Roxas's replacement, political sources said. (AFP)
