Tsinoy nabbed for selling firecrackers in Davao By Raquel C. Bagnol
DAVAO -- Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte personally arrested a Chinese-Filipino businessman on Christmas day for allegedly selling firecrackers, which is prohibited in the city.
Duterte happened to pass by the vicinity of Lizada Street around 6 p.m. on Christmas day, when he heard a firecracker explosion.
He checked where the explosion came from and found the child who lit up the "triangle" (a type of firecracker).
The mayor asked the child where he got the firecracker; the child then pointed to JGD Marketing.
Duterte, together with Sta. Ana Police, arrested one Johnny Go, owner of JGD Marketing along Monteverde corner Lizada Streets in the city's Chinatown district.
The mayor and the police confiscated three plastic baskets filled with assorted firecrackers from Go.
But Go was released Friday morning pending the filing of formal charges against him.
SPO 4 Ricardo Roņa said they cannot detain Go due to the absence of a formal complaint.
Roņa said the ordinance provides that first offenders are penalized with a P1,000 fine and 20 days imprisonment. But this would still depend on the decision of the court.
Go, on the other hand, said in a radio interview that it was his wife who sold the firecrackers, as she was not aware of the ban.
Duterte made the rounds in the city on Christmas eve to personally monitor if there are violators of the city ordinance prohibiting the sale and use of firecrackers.
