SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- Around 38 fishermen were rescued by joint air and sea rescue operatives in South China sea but more than 50 others are still missing in a sea tragedy in the La Union province on Friday, police reported Sunday.

Senior Supt. Samue Diciano, director of the La Union Provincial Police Office, also reported that the dead bodies of the two fishermen who were found floating off the South China sea were already brought back to their hometowns.

"We are hoping that rescuers will rescue the missing fishermen before Monday," Diciano said.

Last Friday, more than 100 fishermen aboard 70 small fishing boats ventured out off the South China sea and ran into strong winds, Diciano reported.

These fishermen, according to Diciano, came from the towns of Bangar, Caba, Luna and Sual.

The police officer said the Office of Civil Defense-Region 1 already sought rescue assistance from the Philippine Air Force (PAF) and Philippine Navy as rescuers are running against time to save the still missing fishermen.

Last Saturday, villagers of Balaoan, La Union, discovered the lifeless body of a fishermen and later learned he was one of the fatalities of the sudden squall in La Union province.

At Poro Point, Captain Eduardo Legaspi, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) commander for North Luzon, reported that rescuers recovered one fatality from the coastal of Sual, Pangasinan.

Authorities identified the recovered dead fishermen in Sual as Lito Carribay of Caba, La Union.

Legaspi said the weather was fair when the fishing boats set out but they were hit by a sudden squall that took them by surprise. Sun.Star Baguio
