14 frat members charged with hazing
By Raquel C. Bagnol

DAVAO CITY -- Fourteen students of a local college were charged by the City Prosecutors Office (CPO) for allegedly beating a female nursing student as part of an initiation rite for membership to the fraternity/sorority in September last year.

Named in the complaint filed before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) are Jan Spike Jayme, Ryan Tadiaman, Jose Conrado Zantua, Raphael Angelo Peņalosa, Richard Han, Wilmar Macaya, Mark Young, Marlon Surido, Mark Jumao-as, Elaine Nuņez alias Katrina Kaye, Menechem Al Daba, Hanna Mae Co, and Catherine Joy Peņablanca, all students of Brokenshire College in Madapo Hills, Davao City, and Joey Delgado, a student of San Pedro College, Davao City.

The 14 students were charged for violating the anti-hazing law.

Eunice Justine Cavan of Almond Drive, Ecoland Phase 7, in Matina Davao City filed the complaint against the 14 students.

Cavan alleged she was recruited to join the Alpha Sigma Omega (ASO) International Fraternity and Sorority, Brokenshire College Chapter, early last year, but she refused.

But she admitted she was finally convinced to join the group on Sept. 6, 2003 while they were inside the Wireless Cemetery after the respondents assured her that she will only be paddled three times.

With two other neophytes, the respondents brought them to the house of Jayme on the corner of Vinsons Street and Dacudao Avenue where the initiation rites were held.

Cavan said they were beaten with a wooden paddle several times, instead of just three as promised.

When Jayme's parents arrived, they were transferred to a "bodega" where the beatings continued. She said she was slapped and hit by a leather belt when she failed to answer questions, until she fainted.

When they went to Victoria Plaza afterwards, Cavan said she fainted again inside the comfort room. She also learned later that a neophyte has to be paddled 133 times before she can be admitted to the group.

Cavan said as soon as she arrived home after the initiation, she felt very sick. This prompted Cavan to tell her aunt about what happened to her earlier.

When her grandmother and father were informed on Sept. 8, 2003 about the initiation, they reported the incident to the police.

In his resolution, 4th Assistant City Prosecutor Leo Madrazo recommended P16,000 bailbond each for the temporary liberty of the respondents.

Penalty for violations of the anti-hazing ranges from death penalty to four to six years imprisonment.
