Chinese man held in P600 million 'shabu' bust

MANILA -- A suspected Chinese drug dealer was arrested in Manila on Thursday in a P600-million drug bust following a tip-off from China, police said.

China's narcotics police alerted their Filipino counterparts about a shipment of illegal drugs supposedly from Laos, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency chief Anselmo Avenida said in a statement.

The tip led police to a warehouse in Meycauayan town north of Manila where they found 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of methamphetamine hydrochloride, a banned stimulant also known as "ice", with a street value of about P600 million, he said.

A Chinese suspect, Chen Chan Fu, was later arrested at a Manila hotel. Avenida described him as an emissary of an international drug gang.

Avenida said shipping records showed the container that carried the drugs had come from the ship Hanjin Busan, which sailed to Manila from Thailand by way of Singapore. The shipment was fraudulently declared as wooden slabs.

The Chinese government tipped off Manila about the shipment after the arrest of three suspected drug traffickers, he said.

Avenida said police wanted to question a Manila port customs broker in connection with the shipment. (AFP)
