CEBU -- Averaging 465,000 hits daily, the Sun.Star network online has breached the 14 million mark for the month of January, based on site statistics.
The online edition of Sun.Star's community of local newspapers, www.sunstar.com.ph raked in a total of 14,426,004 million hits--which count all components in a requested web page like text files, photos, and icons--in January, with the figures climbing daily.
Also for the month of January, 633,000 online users have visited the site, with visitors not only from the Philippines, but from the US, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Japan, U.A.E., UK, Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands.
"Our homepage is Sun.Star. I think all links are useful, especially the Forex link within the Supebalita page," says Randi Conception, a Filipino nurse working in the United Kingdom.
The Sun.Star website collates breaking news, headlines, business news, sports, lifestyle and entertainment, metro and national news, as well as provincial news from Sun.Star's network of local publications from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Improved access and improved content are factors for the surge of online users, says Marlen Limpag, online editor.
"Our focus is local, as this is our strength, and we've included coverage of Philippine fiestas," she said.
The site features specials on fiestas, such as Cebu's Sinulog, and the current Panagbenga flower festival in Baguio; an online forum for discussions on the latest issues; free greetings page for personalized messages, and more.
The site also runs Race 2004, its election page packed with poll updates.
Bessie Salomon, a Filipino marketing and pr manager for a five star hotel in Dubai, U.A.E., says she visits the site to read about happenings in the political scene. "The site is fairly good in reporting about local politics," she says.
Online users are mainly overseas Filipinos looking for the latest news and issues from home.
"I access Sun.Star. It keeps me updated about the Philippines and the on-goings back there," says Maximo Gimeno Jr., a Filipino elementary school teacher in the US. Florence Pia G. Yu
