Canadian fugitive arrested in southern RP (1:11 p.m.)
ZAMBOANGA--A Canadian man wanted for murder by Philippine authorities has been arrested in the southern province of Tawi-Tawi while trying to cross the border into Malaysia, the military said Wednesday.
Dan Michael Lopez was arrested last week but was officially turned over to the immigration bureau in this southern port city only on Monday, military southern command spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Renoir Pascua said.
Navy intelligence agents arrested Lopez after a tip from local villagers.
"After checking his background, it turned out (he) is a wanted man," Pascua told reporters, adding that the Canadian was believed to have killed a man in Cebu.
Authorities have been clamping down on foreigners trying to cross borders in the southern Philippines as part of an anti-terror campaign.
The southern Philippines shares a common sea border with neighbor Malaysia that are often used by pirates and other criminal elements to smuggle goods and narcotics. (AFP) |
