EDSA I, II figures unite to frustrate FPJ, says Enrile (3:04 p.m.) By Harley Palangchao
BAGUIO -- Kilusan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) senatorial candidate Juan Ponce Enrile said Wednesday that key figures in Edsa I and II have joined forces to frustrate the political aspirations of presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr., ahead of the May 10 election.
Enrile, the right-hand man of former President Fidel Ramos and who defected with him from supporting the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos in the heels of the people's power revolt in 1986, said he had no intention of joining other key figures during the 18th commemoration of Edsa I.
Enrile instead joined KNP senatorial candidates Jinggoy Estrada, Ernesto Maceda and Boots Anson Roa in their campaign sortie at the Baguio City Public Market, where they received a grand welcome from vendors, residents and tourists.
In a press conference, Enrile told reporters those who attended the Edsa I commemoration are the personalities behind the move to disqualify Poe, who topped all previous surveys.
President Arroyo, former president Corazon Aquino and Ramos led the Edsa I commemoration at the historic Edsa shrine.
Enrile said Arroyo, Aquino and Ramos are among the elite who want to control power, which is why they have joined forces to make sure Poe will be disqualified from the presidency.
He said they are also the same personalities who plotted the ouster of former President Joseph Estrada through a military-backed people's uprising in 2001. "I think they will be the same elite who always want to be control, that's why our democracy is a farce because it is only beneficial to the elite," Enrile said.
He warned those who are plotting to frustrate the political career of Poe and other KNP candidates, saying the opposition knew the game and that it is even experienced in the game. |
