Davao drivers to strike over fare hike demand By Aurea A. Gerundio
DAVAO CITY -- Transport groups in the city are set to paralyze 90 percent of the public transport in Davao City on March 30.
Samuel Lasay, chairman of Transport in Southern Mindanao for Solidarity, Independence and Nationalism (Transmision) said Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) and the consumers' group Katawhan Kontra Kartel (KKK) will join them in the transport strike.
Lasay said a series of dialogues have been conducted with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) over the drivers' demand for P1.50 fare increase, which had not been heard.
"The transport sector was left with one option and that is to stage a second wave of transport strike. The one-day transport strike will start from 12 midnight of March 30 up to 12 midnight of March 31," he said.
Lasay said several groups of drivers and operators in the city have committed to join the transport strike.
Meanwhile, Bayan spokesperson Jeppie Ramada said various "persuasion" points have already been identified where some 15 to 20 individuals will be stationed to encourage other drivers to participate in the strike.
The "persuasion" points are located at Crossing Ulas, Crossing Matina, Bankerohan, San Pedro, Jones Circle, Agdao fly-over, Magsaysay Park, corner Cabaguio near the Davao Medical Center, and Panacan Depot.
KKK spokesperson Ruben Robillo said they are still trying to convince drivers and operators of buses and taxicabs to join the strike.
"We are still visiting different offices of operators of buses and taxi units to inform them of the upcoming strike and encourage their support," Robillo said.
