NAD member, teener 'mistaken for Tau' shot
CEBU CITY -- One died while two were injured in three separate shooting incidents in Cebu City over the weekend, while a member of the prominent Aznar family was accused of hurting his live-in partner.
A 25-year-old man who is said to be a member of the National Alliance for Democracy (NAD) was shot dead along Magallanes St. Saturday evening.
Victim Rodrigo Nuņez was shot in his chest.
Two suspects, Valentino Madromero and Allan Racho, were immediately arrested by Waterfront police in Plaza Independencia after a witness pointed to them.
Dometelo de la Cuesta, a tanod of Barangay San Roque, told the Homicide Section police that prior to the shooting, he saw Nuņez at the roadside and he looked drunk.
A few minutes later, de la Cuesta heard two gunshots and saw a taxi leaving the place.
Nuņez was found lying by the side of the road, bleeding. Tanods rushed Nuņez to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) but he did not make it.
Police investigators are still conducting follow-up operations to determine the motive of the crime.
Racho and Madronero denied any knowledge, saying they were just drinking in Plaza Independencia when they were picked up by the police.
Two empty shells from a .45 pistol and a deformed slug were found in the crime scene.
The suspects have been subjected to a paraffin test to determine if they recently fired a gun, which gunpowder burns would show.
2 shootings
In a separate incident, a 17-year-old boy, who said he was mistaken for a member of Tau Gamma Phi fraternity, was shot Saturday night along C. Padilla St.
Victim Anthony Supalan, 17, of Carlock was brought to Chong Hua Hospital due to the wound in his head. But he was declared out of danger as the wound was slight.
Supalan said he was just watching a billiards game when he was suddenly shot by the gunman, who did not say a word, then immediately left the place.
The victim believes he was mistaken for a member of Tau Gamma Phi and that his attacker belonged to its rival fraternity, Alpha Kappa Rho, although police investigators have no proof that's the case.
Supalan denied being a member of Tau Gamma, although he has some friends who belong to that fraternity.
In yet another incident, a 21-year-old stay-in worker of a hardware in Bulacao was hit by a stray bullet in his back Sunday dawn.
Franco Samoyan of Tanday, Surigao del Sur said he was awakened by the noise outside the hardware. He peeped to check and saw a group of teenagers.
Suddenly, he felt numb in his back. He was brought to CCMC for treatment of his wound from the stray bullet.
Lovers' quarrel
Still during the weekend, a member of the prominent Aznar clan was accused of assault by his live-in partner.
The guard of Land Bank's P. del Rosario branch called up the Mobile Patrol Group police, thinking that there was kidnapping after he saw a woman dragged by a man into a Honda CRV.
Policemen and the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Branch (CIIB) responded to the alarm and saw the car along Gorordo Ave.
Before they could approach, the vehicle entered a compound that police later learned was owned by the Aznar family.
But police saw the woman, who identified herself as the live-in partner of Matthew Aznar.
A police investigation revealed that the woman, later identified as Allana Cortez Tolero, 21, of Mandaue City, fought with Aznar inside the car.
Tolero got off the car but Aznar followed her and allegedly forced her back into the vehicle. That's what the bank guard saw.
Inside the car, Aznar allegedly hit Tolero with a pipe.
Policemen were not allowed inside the compound or to check the vehicle without a search warrant.
The police instead accompanied Tolero to CCMC for treatment and then she was brought to the CIIB where the incident was recorded in the blotter as a case of physical injuries.
Tolero said she and Aznar have been lovers for two years and have been living together for six months.
Matthew previously landed in the papers after he was arrested by the police with his brother Josman in a raid for alleged illegal possession of firearms.
They were charged, but the case was dismissed.
Josman, however, remains in jail and is appealing a death sentence from the Supreme Court that stemmed from the Chiong sisters' abduction. With CPL of Superbalita
