9 killed in Easter holiday travel accidents

MANILA -- Nine people were killed and 26 injured in two traffic accidents on Thursday, as thousands took to the roads for the long Easter weekend, police and news reports said.

Four people were killed when a commuter bus plunged 106 meters into a ravine in the northern province of Isabela shortly after midnight, police Chief Superintendent Vidal Quirol said. At least 26 people were injured.

A few hours later, a pick-up truck and a car carrying a family of four crashed head-on in Camarines Sur province, south of Manila, leaving the family and the truck driver dead, radio reports said.

The travel to home provinces or go on long weekend vacations is traditional during the Easter holidays, bringing thousands of cars and buses to the highways. (AFP)
